Who is God? What is Love?

Who is God? What is Love?

First, we will find out that God is love. Then, we will define love.

John explains that God is love.

And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him. – 1Jo 4:16 NKJV
Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. – 1Jo 4:17 NKJV

You are Created in His Own Image

Moses records that God created man in His own image.

So God created man in His [own] image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. – Gen 1:27 NKJV

How Do We Become Love?

If God is love and we are created in His image, we are to become love also. God’s Word is our instruction manual on how we are to live our lives and transform our hearts and minds to become the express image of Him.

But, What is Love?

The Apostle Paul clearly defines love in his first letter to the church in Corinth.

Love suffers long [and] is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; – 1Co 13:4 NKJV
does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; – 1Co 13:5 NKJV
does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; – 1Co 13:6 NKJV
bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. – 1Co 13:7 NKJV
Love never fails…- 1Co 13:8 NKJV
And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these [is] love. – 1Co 13:13 NKJV

The word that is translated as “love” in these verses is “Agape.” See Blue Letter Bible.

Jesus–Eternal Love

The author of Hebrews gives us comfort in knowing that we can trust God to never change.

Jesus Christ [is] the same yesterday, today, and forever. – Heb 13:8 NKJV

The Greatest Commandments

Don’t complicate the Gospel of Jesus Christ with “religion” and man-made rules. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, and soul. And love your neighbor as yourself. When you obey these commands, everything else will fall into place.

“Teacher, which [is] the great commandment in the law?” – Mat 22:36 NKJV
Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ – Mat 22:37 NKJV
“This is [the] first and great commandment. – Mat 22:38 NKJV
“And [the] second [is] like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ – Mat 22:39 NKJV
“On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” – Mat 22:40 NKJV
