My Brother’s Keeper
God did not call you to be your brother’s keeper!
And the LORD said unto Cain, Where [is] Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: [Am] I my brother’s keeper? [Gen 4:9 KJV]
In fact, when Abel replied to God, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” He was mocking God’s instructions.
What Keeps God from Being Mocked?
Is God going to smack us? Whatever that looks like to you.
NO!
Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. [Gal 6:7 KJV]
In Galatians 6:8, Paul explains further what sowing and reaping looks like in this world in this life.
This is valuable instruction that Paul and all of the authors of the Bible have written so that the man of God can be perfect as explained in 2 Timothy 3:15-17.
Study!
Study to be your brother’s keeper?
No!
And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. [Gen 4:2 KJV]
Study to mind your own business!
Abel’s business was keeping sheep, and that is what he was doing.
God had taught Cain 1 Thessalonians 4:11 even before He had Paul write it. Instead of minding his own business, Cain wanted the relationship Abel had with God without any personal investment.
Whatever anointing, calling, ministry, job, work, etc. that God has for you is infinitely better for you than what He has for anyone else. Yes, infinitely, world without end (Ephesians 3:21).
And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; [1Th 4:11 KJV]
When Cain asked God, “Am I my brother’s keeper,” Cain was mocking God.
“Well, God, you told me to mind my own business, so why are you asking me about my brother?”
As New Testament believers, we have revelation knowledge that we can use to rightly divide the Old Testament Scripture.
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. [2Ti 2:15 KJV]
New Testament Believers
God never wanted to stop fellowshiping with His children. He was still talking with Cain both before and after Cain murdered his brother.
And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground. [Gen 4:10 KJV]
God is Never Silent!
Jesus says that His sheep hear His voice (John 10:27). We have a whole book.
When I hear people talking about God being silent, I immediately know a few things about them.
Even if they are a Christian, they are in unbelief. Hard-hearted Christians are deceived. They are walking by sight and not by faith (2 Corinthians 5:7).
Your Brother’s Keeper?
My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son [in whom] he delighteth. [Pro 3:11-12 KJV]
Again, please read 2 Timothy 3:15-17.
If you are not reading, studying, meditating on the written word of God, you despise His chastening (Proverbs 3:11-12).
God was chastening Cain with His spoken words. Cain despised God’s instruction. First, Cain lied, “I don’t know!” Then he twisted God’s instruction to justify himself (Genesis 4:9).
If you think God abuses His children with the works of the devil, you are calling evil (devil) “good,” and God (good) evil (Isaiah 5:20).
Just as the guy with one talent, we will reap what we sow (Matthew 25:24-25).
That is absolutely NOT the fear of God (Malachi 3:16)! It is laziness, spiritual and physical (Proverbs 22:13, 28:1).
Liar Liar!
Pants on fire!
The master had sown talents into his servants and came back expecting to reap a harvest (Matthew 25:26-27).
According to Matthew 6:21, the master’s heart was with his servants because he had sown talents or treasure into their success!
The Father’s heart is with all of humanity, the entire world (John 1:29, Hebrews 9:26).
Out of Your Own Mouth
And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, [thou] wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow: [Luk 19:22 KJV]
The nobleman did not disagree with the wicked servant. Jesus does not say, “After all I have done for you…” No.
His word speaks of the consequences of our actions and the power of our speech.
So, what’s the problem?
We have an enemy who would rather we stay busy doing a bunch of dead works while we complain about Mary sitting at Jesus’ feet or about Abel’s obedience and rewards (Hebrews 11:6) etc.
Don’t be deceived!
I am not my brother’s keeper.
As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD and mind our own business (Joshua 24:15). Amen!
And ye shall serve the LORD your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee. … By little and little I will drive them out from before thee, until thou be increased, and inherit the land. … They shall not dwell in thy land, lest they make thee sin against me: for if thou serve their gods, it will surely be a snare unto thee. [Exo 23:25, 30, 33 KJV]
You Will Want To prosper and be in health even as your soul prospers (3 John 1:2).
