How Jesus Teaches

How Jesus Teaches

Mark 10:1-12 has the title “Jesus’ Teaching About Divorce” at the “Blue Letter Bible” website. Christians need to know how Jesus teaches. First, He didn’t chase people down to smack them with His Words! Second, He met people where they were in their understanding. Third, He expounded privately to His disciples.

They Came to Jesus

Jesus didn’t go after people. They came to Him to either learn from Him or to “tempt” God!

And he arose from thence, and cometh into the coasts of Judaea by the farther side of Jordan: and the people resort unto him again; and, as he was wont, he taught them again. – Mar 10:1 KJV

They came back for more of Jesus’ teachings. The people knew that teaching wisdom was His “wont,” or custom. They wanted to know how Jesus teaches.

Tempting God

And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away [his] wife? tempting him. – Mar 10:2 KJV

Jesus didn’t run the Pharisees off. He didn’t correct them for wanting to “tempt God.” What did Jesus do? He asked them to tell Him what their understanding was.

He Met Them

Jesus often teaches and heals by first asking very important questions. Then, He actually listens!

And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you? – Mar 10:3 KJV
And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put [her] away. – Mar 10:4 KJV

The Hardness of Your Heart

Jesus may not have been very nice. But in His infinite kindness, he told the truth!

And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. – Mar 10:5 KJV

He always told the truth with kindness! They were not alive when Moses wrote this precept. Now, that is wisdom! Then, He takes them back to how it was when everything was still “very good (Genesis 1:31).”

Back to the Beginning

But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. – Mar 10:6 KJV
For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; – Mar 10:7 KJV
And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. – Mar 10:8 KJV
What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. – Mar 10:9 KJV

Jesus knows the end from the beginning. This is how He teaches and models the proper way for us. We can know and practice teaching how Jesus teaches.

God has revealed all of the mysteries that He has hidden for us! We already know how this thing is going to end because we have that Revelation of Jesus Christ (Revelation 1:1-1:3). We know what eternity looks like (Revelation 21, 22). The schizophrenic “god of this world (2 Corinthians 4:4)” is the only difference I can see between now and eternity!

Jesus Teaches in Private

They went back to the house! Jesus teaches His true disciples in private. We need to know who we are talking with and what their motives are.

And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same [matter]. – Mar 10:10 KJV
And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. – Mar 10:11 KJV
And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery. – Mar 10:12 KJV

The Lord Is Gracious

Paul explains in 1 Corinthians 7:10-13 that a husband or wife is free to go! If your spouse is mistreating you in any way, you can leave them! But don’t go so you can find another mate! That is adultery. It is better to stay and get discipled so God can heal your marriage. If there is abuse of any kind you are free to separate as long as needed! Hallelujah!

And if they are committing adultery, you are free to leave and remarry, but that is not God’s best for you or your family either.

What if I have already left my spouse and remarried?

Thank God for Romans 3:23, 5:12! Jesus took it on the cross. You are free from sin, guilt, and condemnation. God can bless you and wants to bless you right where you are right now!

We Are Warned

Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you. – Mat 7:6 KJV

Mark 6:3-6 explains that unbelievers who know you best will be offended. That is why He teaches us to hate unbelief in ourselves and our own families. See “Laughed to Scorn.”

Why?

What is the only thing worse than living with someone who doesn’t claim to know Jesus? Being or living with a hypocrite! That is someone that Jesus clearly defines in the Bible. I have written two posts lately and you can read more below:

I know firsthand how my own hypocrisy almost destroyed my family. God restored us, but the enemy almost destroyed my marriage. I hurt my husband and our children terribly. And myself! Thank God that people are offended and run from hypocrites!

You will want to be a disciple!

How Can I Know How Jesus Teaches?

You can know how to teach like Jesus because His Holy Spirit is in you just waiting for you to hear Him. He wants you to operate in “The Power of His Might” by experiencing Life Eternal now.
